Former Florida State star Derrick Alexander is out as Bishop McLaughlin’s head football coach, the school announced Tuesday morning.

Alexander left his position to spend more time with his family but will still work for the Hurricanes as a consultant, Bishop McLaughlin dean of students Joe Jasinski said.

“Bishop McLaughlin Catholic HS is appreciative of everything Coach Alexander did for the program as Head Coach, and we are excited to have him stay on as a consultant,” Jasinski said in a news release.

Alexander is one of the top defensive players in FSU history. The consensus All-America defensive lineman had 11 tackles against Nebraska to help the Seminoles win the 1993 national championship. He’s a member of the school’s athletic hall of fame and was the No. 11 overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft before injuries derailed his NFL career.

Alexander became Bishop’s head coach before the 2011 season and compiled a 12-19 record.

Bishop was 2-8 last year and will return to be an independent program in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference after a winless season in Class 3A, District 4.
