Tampa teams prevailed in the Class 2A-9 tournament at Auburndale on Wednesday.
Jesuit won the boys title and Holy Names took the girls; both will host regionals next week. The Tampa Catholic boys also move on as the runnerup.
Jesuit swept the singles and doubles finals, with junior Palmer Evans defeating Tampa Catholic’s Richard Golinello 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 1 singles. The Tigers’ Nos. 2-5 players and both doubles teams won their finals in straight sets.
The Jaguar girls also swept all five singles, with junior Caroline Lozo topping Lake Wales’ Jessica Hignight 6-3, 6-2 for the No. 1 title. AHN’s No. 1 doubles team of Lozo and Olivia Rivas also won in straight sets.
Class 4A-6: Newsome was the lone county school to advance. The girls won the team title, notching victories at Nos. 1-5 singles and both doubles. Kylie Moulin wrapped up two automatic state berths by beating host Lakeland George Jenkins’ Taylor Oliver 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, then pairing with fellow freshman Tess Studdiford at No. 1 doubles.
The Newsome boys advance as the runnerup, falling 17-12 to George Jenkins. The Wolves’ Garrett Watson (No. 1) and Jacob Fullerton (No. 5) won their finals.
Strawberry Crest’s Tristen Ray and Sahil Patel were the only other county champs, beating George Jenkins’ Hunter Branstner and Nico Loret de Mola 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
