DADE CITY — There would be no waiting for the four-time district champion Pasco girls tennis team — come rain or shine.

On a day when most region semifinal tournaments were rained out, Pasco coach Don Charlick had his team using squeegees, rollers and blowers to dry the court following morning and early afternoon rains.

“The courts were still kind of wet, but we were ready for it (Tuesday),” Charlick said.

Playing doubles first, Pasco cruised to a 7-0 win over Tarpon Springs and will host the Fivay-Hernando winner Thursday at 3 p.m. Those teams were scheduled to play today at 9 a.m.

Mady Johnson and Shelbie Timlake defeated Clivonya Woodside and Delaney McCall 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. Amanda Dee and Sara Slayton then beat Gina Szucs and Kalei Renardo in No. 2 doubles to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Singles victories by Johnson, Timlake, Dee, Slayton and Ashlynn Rainaldi followed for the sweep.

Pasco, which lost in the first round of regionals last season and in 2011, earned a berth in the second round for only the second time and first since 2012.

“I’m feeling pretty good about this team,” Charlick said.
