Freedom DE Scott Patchan has orally committed to Miami, he announced Saturday afternoon via Twitter during a trip to see the Hurricanes’ spring game.
Patchan is one of Tampa Bay’s top recruits. Rivals considers the junior a four-star recruit and the country’s No. 17 strongside defensive end, and he was No. 6 in the Tampa Bay Times’ early look at the area’s top 2015 prospects.
The 6-foot-6, 240-pound pass rusher had six sacks and 11 tackles for a loss midway through his junior season for the Patriots.
He chose UM over more than 20 other schools, including Florida State, USF, UCF, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
Patchan comes from a loaded football family with Hurricane ties. His dad played for Miami and was drafted by the Eagles. His older brother, Matt, starred at Armwood, played for the Gators and Boston College and is a possible NFL Draft prospect.
Oral commitments are non-binding until recruits sign letters of intent during their senior years.
