Three bay area student athletes — Robinson's Caroline King, Canterbury's Emily McMullen and Indian Rocks Christian's Paul Parish — were named to the Florida High School Athletic Association academic all-state team.
King has run cross country and played flag football, lacrosse and soccer. She is ranked ninth in her class wth a 4.0 unweighted GPA and plans to attend the University of Virginia to study pre-medicine.
McMullen, the school's valedictorian, was a swimmer and played basketball all four years for the Crusaders. She also played softball the past two seasons. She has a 4.0 GPA and wants to attend Wake Forest to major in biology.
Parish, a valedictorian, has a 4.0 GPA. He ran track and played football for the Golden Eagles all four years and basketball for one season. He is deciding between the University of Alabama and Mississippi College to study biochemistry and perform medical research.
The academic team is for seniors who have at least a 3.5 GPA and earn varsity letters in two sports during their junior and senior years. Those selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship and will be honored during a banquet June 9 in Gainesville.
