CASSELBERRY — While Tampa Prep’s hopes of a team championship ended Wednesday, the Terrapin girls did have two players alive for Class A individual titles Thursday at Red Bug Lake Park.
In the No. 1 singles final, Paige Leavy lost 6-2, 6-4 to Allegra Hanlon of Ransom Everglades.
“I know it’s kind of a cliché but it really was a closer match than the score makes it look,” Tampa Prep coach Chris Cary said. “The girl she played gave her a bit of a hard time. She played a lot of baseline shots. But Paige played well. I’m proud of our whole team, and we only lose one senior.”
Leavy then teamed with Izabelle Baskette in the No. 1 doubles semifinals, only to fall 6-2, 6-3 to Ransom Everglades’ Hanlon and Daniela Lopez.
One local did tack home an individual championship at Red Bug Lake. Canterbury’s Evan Holvoet won two matches, including a 7-5, 6-1 win over Shaun Berman of Miami Country Day in the final.
“I really wanted to medal,” Holvoet said. “I’d never done it before and this was my last chance.”
In Class 3A, Wiregrass Ranch and Naples Baron Collier shared the boys overall championship. Each team scored 15 points and will be co-champions. It was the first team championship in any sport for Wiregrass Ranch.
The Bulls’ Agustin Moreno won the No. 1 singles championship with a 6-7 (4-6), 6-1, 6-0 win over Davey Roberts of Matanzas. Moreno faces John Carlin of Fort Myers for the overall championship this morning at Sanlando Park.
