Ben Alford confirmed in a text message Friday that he will be resigning as the football coach at Wesley Chapel.

“Yes, I will be resigning,” Alford said. “It’s not official yet.”

Alford, a former Pasco quarterback who played college football in Iowa, said he will be taking a job out of state.

The Wildcats showed improvement early in Alford’s tenure.

His team went from a three-win season in 2010 to a 5-5 record on the field (6-4 including a forfeit from Land O’Lakes) last fall.
Wesley Chapel graduated 19 seniors from that team, including nine who signed to play college football.

The Wildcats finished 3-7 this year after a season-ending 24-13 loss to Land O’Lakes last week.

Alford will leave the program with a 12-18 record in three seasons.

Both schools in town now have openings for a head football coach.

Wiregrass Ranch’s Jeremy Shobe resigned Monday to give his program a new start after back-to-back winless seasons.
