ORLANDO — Lakewood could not be contained on offense, totaling 424 yards en route to beating Bishop Moore 37-13 on Friday night in Class 5A region quarterfinal.

“We’re very excited for a chance to move on to the next round,” coach Cory Moore said. “The guys did a great job tonight.”

After forcing Bishop Moore (8-3) to punt on its first possession, it only took four plays for Lakewood’s Zamarie Johnson to take a handoff 43 yards to the end zone.

The offense continued to pile up yards behind Laterian Latimer’s legs and Tracy Johnson’s arm. Latimer gave the Spartans a 15-0 lead going into halftime after his 4-yard touchdown run and a 30-yard field goal by Michael Growney.

Johnson led his team on a 12-play drive on the opening possession of the second half after a BM personal foul for roughing the punter. Johnson went 3-for-4 for 58 yards with an 11-yard TD pass to Marquez Valdes. He finished the night 10-of-16 for 220 yards.

Late in the third quarter, Valdes went down with an apparent head injury and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for “precautionary measures,” according to Moore.

Latimer scored again in the fourth quarter from a yard out. On Lakewood’s (10-1) next possession, Jocqui Ellison replaced Johnson under center and only needed one pass to find Tyrae Boykins on a 45-yard score.

The win sets up a rematch at Robinson.

“We got to come in and play good football next week,” Moore said. “Play fundamentally sound, come in and start fast and learn from our mistakes.”
