East Lake swimmer Alexandra Aitchison announced on Twitter that she committed to Duke on Tuesday.
"I just felt like Duke is the perfect fit for me," Aitchison said. "Between the undergraduate opportunities they offer and the rising success of the swimming program, I couldn't want anything more."
Aitchison, the Times' 2013 Pinellas County girls swimmer of the year, took first in the 200-yard freestyle and 500 free and swam legs on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay team at last year's Class 4A state swim meet to help the Eagles finish second overall.
She is ranked fourth in the state and 16th nationally in the 2015 class by collegeswimming.com and ninth in the FINA junior world rankings in the 400 free.
Aitchison visited Duke earlier this month. She was supposed to visit Harvard last week but canceled the trip because she was sick. Aitchison also was accepted into Stanford but decided not to visit because already was set on joining the Blue Devils.
"Coach (Dan) Colella and I share the same visions and goals for my college career," Aitchison said. "I'm excited to be a part of such a fun, positive and supportive group of athletes.".
