Brandon junior and three-time state champion Kyle Norstrem orally committed to Virginia Tech on Tuesday. Norstrem, still with two full seasons of high school left to wrestle, elected to commit early and will be joining a program that has won the last two ACC championships and placed in the top 10 in the nation the last two years.
Norstrem joins head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser, winner of ACC Coach of the Year, the past two seasons as well as his older brother Kevin, a five-time state champion who is now entering his redshirt freshman season.
"The team treated me good and I connected with the coaches," Norstrem said of his recent visit to Blacksburg. "I watched my brother (Kevin) and saw how much better he got and I was pretty impressed with the program; it's where I want to be."
The younger Norstrem has always benefitted from older brother Kevin's experience.
"My brother has been my coach since we were wrestling in the living room," Norstrem said. "I feel like I made the right choice and with that pressure off, there's new pressure to keep getting better and not slow down."
Norstrem is already the fourth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 113 pounds, according to Intermat, and he is ranked 16th among the top 50 recruits in the nation for the class of 2016. He will wrestle at 120 pounds this winter for Brandon in search of his fourth state title.
"He's going to fit in there really well," Brandon coach Russ Cozart said. "With his older brother there, it adds to the advantage go being able to fit in and adjust; it's a big adjustment from high school to college."
