Boys Golfer of the Year: Jack Maguire, Sr., St. Petersburg
Why we picked him: Two words: state champion. Maguire trailed by a stroke after the first day, then shot 4-under 68 on the second to win the Class 2A tournament by two shots at Deer Island Country Club in Tavares. During the regular season, he won the Mustang Invitational at Seminole Lakes CC with even-par 71. His PCAC nine-hole stroke average was 35, tops in the county.
Most impressive accomplishment: Maguire was playing in his fifth state tournament (he played as an eighth-grader at Shorecrest), and it was his last chance to grab an individual title. After shooting 73 during a cold, windy opening round, Maguire shot 32 on his first nine holes and went even par on the second nine to win. He became Pinellas County’s first boys state champ since Seminole’s Wink Amerman in 1996.
Future plans: Maguire has a golf scholarship to Florida State University and is undecided on a major.
Did you know? Maguire was named a Rolex Junior All-American, a designation given to the top junior golfers in the country. He is also part of Florida Virtual School for his senior year and said he will finish up his high school classes in January. But he will participate in St. Petersburg’s graduation ceremonies in June. …Maguire’s brother, M.J., is a sophomore golfer at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
Coach of the year
Kevin Dyer, St. Petersburg: Dyer had a problem all coaches would love to have — too many talented players for the five starting spots. He was able to keep his Green Devils focused all season and guided them to a tie for sixth place at the Class 2A state tournament.
First team
Ryan Orr, Sr., Clearwater Central Catholic: Shot 68 at the CCC Invitational and hovered around par in most of the 18-hole tournaments. Finished tied for 13th at state with a two-day score of 12-over 156. He’ll play at Florida next season.
Anthony Quintessenza, Jr., Northside Christian: Played very well down the stretch, including a 67 to tie for first at the Vinoy Invitational and 72 to win the A-15 district championship at East Lake Woodlands.
Jake Kevorkian, Sr., St. Petersburg: Had a 36-stroke average in PCAC tournaments, won the CCC Invitational with 67 at Belleair Country Club, shot 71 at districts and fired 2-under 70 in the final round of the state tournament.
Kyle Kubala, Sr., Northeast: Was second in the PCAC with a nine-hole stroke average of 36.8. He shot 75 at the district tournament to help the Vikings advance to regionals.
Donald Wasoff, Jr., Countryside: Played well at several of the 18-hole tournaments, including the Mustang Invitational (73), Vinoy Invitational (71) and 2A-11 district tournament (75).

Girls Golfer of the Year: Lauren Coe, Sr., Palm Harbor University
Why we picked her: Coe had a 36-stroke average for nine holes during regular-season play. She also won the district championship with 1-under 70 at Heritage Springs. Coe was seventh at the Class 2A state tournament with consecutive rounds of 77, best of any Pinellas golfer.
Most impressive accomplishment: Coe says she has two. The first was finishing seventh at state. Her opening round was especially impressive considering the cold and gusty conditions. The second was her district score, her lowest 18-hole score of the high school season.
Future plans: Coe will play golf at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. She currently attends St. Petersburg Collegiate School and will graduate with the equivalent of a college AA degree. She plans to major in business or communications, and after four years will have a master’s degree.
Did you know? Coe has a twin brother, Camden, who attends East Lake and is on the school’s club hockey team. …Coe is the second straight PHU player to earn golfer of the year following Jasmine Wade.
Coach of the year
D.J. Jackson, Northside Christian: The Mustangs’ oldest players are freshmen, but they still finished in a tie for seventh out of 16 teams at the Class A state tournament.
First team
Alison Armstrong, Fr., Northside Christian: Won the Class A-15 tournament with 71 and finished 25th at the Class A state tournament.
Madison Glennie, Jr., Countryside: Finished second at the Mustang Invitational with 74. Shot near par in most nine-hole tournaments this season.
Haydyn Gibson, Fr., Osceola: Won the 2A-12 district championship with 74, shot 78 at regionals to make state, where she finished tied for 19th. Also finished second at the Mustang Invitational (74).
Emma Paschal, So., Clearwater Central Catholic: Another consistent season for Paschal, who qualified for the region and state tournaments. She finished tied for 39th at the latter out of 94 golfers.
Ashley Zagers, 7th, Northside Christian: Zagers helped the Mustangs to a state tournament appearance and led the team with 79 at the Mustang Invitational.
