Three days after watching his career come to an excruciating end, Robinson coach Mike DePue received a flattering consolation prize.

He has been named the state's Class 5A coach of the year. DePue told the Times on Monday morning that he was informed of the honor by a representative of the Florida Dairy Farmers, the award's annual sponsor.

The winningest coach in Knights history (72-43), DePue automatically becomes a finalist for the state's overall coach of the year award. The award is presented in conjunction with the state's Mr. Football award, also sponsored by the Florida Dairy Farmers.

DePue's career ended with Friday's 24-20 loss to Tallahassee Godby in the state semifinals. A day before, he was named the county's coach of the year for the third time at the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame luncheon.
