In the wake of last Friday's shooting in Newtown, Conn., Berkeley Prep has made a subtle, sympathetic gesture of respect toward the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims.

The school announced today it is changing the name of its upcoming boys basketball holiday tournament from the Berkeley Basketball Shootout to the Berkeley Basketball Invitational.

“As faculty, coaches and administrators who work with children every day, we are deeply saddened by the events surrounding the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary,” Berkeley athletic director and boys basketball coach Bobby Reinhart said in a news release.

“We feel that the term ‘shootout’ would not be appropriate in association with this event as the community of Newtown, and the nation, continue to cope with the unthinkable acts that claimed the lives of 26 innocent victims.”

Berkeley will host its 10th annual tournament Jan. 4-5 at the Straz Family Field House. The school also announced a portion of the event's proceeds will go to benefit a memorial fund established in honor of the Sandy Hook victims and their families.

"We encourage as many as possible to come out to see some great basketball, and support a good cause at the same time," Reinhart said.
