Coincidence hit a trifecta Friday night, when juniors Chivarsky Corbett (Tampa Catholic) and Justin Gray (Berkeley Prep) and senior Travis Johnson (Jesuit) all converged at destiny's scorers table.
In what may be an unprecedented occurrence in Hillsborough County, all three hit the 1,000-point mark for their respective careers in holiday tournament action.
Corbett did it with the most flair -- by far -- with a school-record 50 points in the Crusaders' 105-89 romp of Sarasota Cardinal Mooney in the semifinals of the City of Tampa Championship at Tampa Prep. Corbett, who has 84 points in two tournament games, now has 1,033 for his career. On Friday, he scored 28 in the first half.
Johnson, meantime, scored 17 in the undefeated Tigers' 73-33 rout of St. Petersburg in the Nike Gulfshore Invitational in his home gym, giving him 1,000 on the nose.
At the Brighthouse Holiday Tournament in Clearwater, Gray -- 19 points shy of 1,000 entering the Buccaneers' contest against Gainesville -- also hit the millenial mark on the nose in Berkeley's 66-37 blowout.
Observing Gray's historic night: Corbett, whose team played earlier in the evening. He and Gray are close friends and teammates on the Florida Select AAU squad.
