LARGO — Calvary Christian was hoping for a second straight night of last-second heroics, but it was Harmony that made the key shot Saturday at the Indian Rocks Christian Holiday tournament.
Tied at 38 with 52 seconds left, Harmony's Ragen Dotson buried a 3-pointer and was fouled by the Warriors' Rachel Mostert. Dotson converted the rare four-point play and the Longhorns went on to win the championship 45-40.
Calvary Christian had defeated Sickles in Friday's semifinals thanks to a Kasey Howard 3-pointer that forced overtime. The Warriors didn't get a big basket late in Saturday's final.
In fact, the Warriors were fortunate to be in the game after trailing 20-10 at halftime. But the Warriors scored the first seven points of the second half.
The Warriors (13-2) took their first lead late in the third when Caroline Andreassen hit a 3-pointer to make it 25-24. They led 28-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
"That was just effort on our girls' part," Calvary Christian coach Brooke Sibert said. "They played very hard to get back into the game."
The fourth quarter was a seesaw affair, with four lead changes. The teams matched 3-pointers down the stretch and Mostert heated up for the Warriors. The 6-foot-2 center scored all of her 10 points in the second half. But her fifth foul on Dotson's 3 proved to be crucial.
Calvary Christian tried to cut the lead but missed a shot. Harmony's Rebekah Fitzpatrick was fouled with 27 seconds left and hit both free throws.
"This was the championship game, so you expect to play a good team like Harmony," Sibert said. "We played very hard just to get back into it."
The Warriors were led by Savannah Plentovich, who scored 13. Carley Plentovich and Mostert each added 10.
Harmony (14-2) was led by Julia Ingler, who had 18 points and was named the tournament's most valuable player.
In the boys final, Sickles defeated Palmetto 49-44 to win the championship. Daniel Harris converted a three-point play with 33 seconds left and then hit two key free throws with 15 seconds left to put the game away. The Gryphons' Malcolm Johnson was named the most valuable player.
