It was a dizzying weekend for East Lake offensive tackle Mason Cole and athlete George Campbell, both considered among the top players in the nation in their respective class.
Cole (Class of 2014) spent the past weekend on an unofficial trip to Alabama, where he watched the Crimson Tide celebrate its third national championship in four years with a parade that ended with a walk of champions outside Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Cole later received an offer after a private meeting with his family and coach Nick Saban.
“Alabama is definitely high on my list,” Cole said. “Their fans are crazy about football.”
Meanwhile, Campbell (Class of 2015) picked up offers from FSU and Ohio State. Those came two days after he was offered by Florida.
This past season, Campbell emerged as one of the area’s top players on both sides of the ball. On offense, he had 30 catches for 766 yards and five touchdowns. On defense, he recorded 56 tackles and caused three fumbles.
FSU and Ohio State both offered Campbell as a receiver. Other schools, such as North Carolina State and UCF offered him as an athlete.
