Newsome two-way star Will Worth, the Tampa Bay Times’ Hillsborough County Offensive Player of the Year, said Monday that he has orally committed to the Naval Academy.

Worth plans to sign a letter of intent with the Midshipmen during Newsome’s national signing day ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior led the Wolves to their best season in school history, throwing for 1,051 yards and 11 touchdowns, rushing for 1,537 and 19 more scores and tallying 104 tackles – all team-leading totals.

With Worth at the helm, Newsome went 8-5 and advanced to the Class 7A regional finals, where the Wolves lost 21018 to state-ranked and then-undefeated Kissimmee Osceola.

He was a four-year starter at Newsome, first as a freshman linebacker and then as a sophomore quarterback. Over those four years, Worth tallied more than 5,400 yards of offense, 57 touchdowns and nearly 300 tackles.

As the son of a retired Navy helicopter pilot and younger brother of a Naval Academy student, Worth seemed destined to end up on the Annapolis, Md., campus. He also received interest from a few Ivy League schools.
