When St. Petersburg kicker Sean Covington realized he was good enough to kick in college he knew exactly where he wanted to go: Florida State.
“That was my dream school,’’ Covington said.
He soon found out that his dream school didn’t necessarily want him. That started a journey that ended 3,000 miles away at UCLA. At a summer kicking camp run by Chris Sailer, a former UCLA kicker, Covington got noticed. Sailer made his alma mater aware of Covington.
After a visit to Los Angeles, Covington was sold. He has been committed to UCLA for months and he made it official Wednesday morning when he signed with the Bruins.
Covington was one of three Green Devils who signed national letters of intent in the school’s Archives Room. He was joined by Jeremy Kerr (Florida State) and John Pellens (Maryville (Tenn.) College).
Covington will take off for UCLA in June and enroll in two classes before the football season starts. He hopes to punt and kickoff during his freshman year.
“I’d been to California a few times and really liked it,’’ Covington said. “I can’t wait to get out there.’’
