CLEARWATER — Clearwater Central Catholic’s track team had to take the long route for its third Class A, District 9 runnerup finish in four seasons.

After the field events Thursday, the Marauders were third, trailing by a wide margin. But thanks to its relay teams and depth in the distance events, CCC started gobbling up points.

By the final event, the Marauders were a half-point behind Lakeland Christian for second place. CCC’s 4x400 relay team of Sarah Kuhne, Samantha Sosa, Kelly Shanahan and Hayley Moyer won in 4:27.75 sealed the runnerup spot with 147 points.

“I knew we were going to have a shot because we were going to pick up so many points in the relays and distance races,” Marauders coach Shawn Watkins said.

Shanahan played a big role in the running finals. She also teamed with Kuhne, Sosa and Moyer on the winning 4x100 (53.59) and took first in the 300 hurdles (47.11).

It was memorable night for Shanahan, who was asked to prom via the Jumbotron at Calvary Christian. She said yes.

“Everything went great,” Shanahan said. “We all ran well, and I had a good time in the 300 hurdles.”

CCC’s 4x800 team of Katie Englert, Hanna Weilinski, Saphara Harrell and Kelsey Orr won in 11:01.20. Harrell also took first in the 1,600 (5:48.94) and 3200 (12.31.25).

Kuhne won the 200 (27.33) and Moyer won the 400 (1:02.31).

Bishop McLaughlin’s girls, behind a strong performance in the field events, finished fourth overall with 79 points.

Camille Baumrucker was the big point scorer with wins in the long jump (16 feet, 2½ inches) and triple jump (33-9½). Bishop McLaughlin also had wins by Rachel Verscharen in the discus (93-11) and Desiree Nathe in the high jump (5-0). Kate Comfort took second in the 800 (2:42.46).

CCC’s boys were third with 123 points. The Marauders’ 4x400 team of Ben Kieler, Chris Kieler, Jacobi Adderley and JT Steele won in 3:47.86. The 4x800 team and 4x100 team each took second.

Ben Kieler also took first in the high jump (6-2) and Saul Ramirez won the 3,200 (10:24.73).

A-10: AFA boys get boost from gridiron

Admiral Farragut boys relied on a strong contingent of football players to sprint to a team title, ending St. Petersburg Catholic’s three-year reign as champs.

Napoleon Maxwell played a big role for the Blue Jackets, taking first in the 100, 200 and running a leg on the winning 4x100 relay team.

Brad Hyman-Muhammad also won the 300 hurdles and was part of the 4x100 relay.

The Barons had wins from Connor Cureton in the 800 and Michael Rusnak in the 400. Both were on the winning 4x800 relay.

On the girls side, the Barons won the team title despite not winning a relay or individual event.

Admiral Farragut’s Brittany McGee was dominant in her events, winning the long jump, high jump, 100 and 300 hurdles. Shorecrest’s Alex Eaton won the 3,200.

The meet was marred because of equipment failure, which forced the finals to be hand-timed. The meet took nearly 10 hours to complete.
