If their sack and pancake totals can match their scholarship offer tally, Montel McBride and Sedrick King could spark a Plant City football resurgence this fall.
McBride (6-foot-4, 330 pounds) and King (6-4, 220) have six and seven offers, respectively, after a series of solid performances at various combines.
Both have been offered by USF, UCF and FIU. McBride, a defensive tackle/offensive guard nicknamed "Blind Side," also has offers from FSU, Kentucky and Ohio. King, a defensive end/outside linebacker, has been offered by Rutgers, Memphis, Louisville and West Virginia.
Fellow defensive end John Broome (6-2 1/2, 230) got his first offer, from FAMU, last week.
Broome (center) and King (left) teamed for 67 tackles and 10 sacks in 2012. McBride, who bench presses 345 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in a hair over five seconds, has exploded on the offseason combine/showcase circuit on the offensive side.
He was offensive line MVP at last month's Nike Football Training Camp in Orlando, and won the same honor at an MVP Camp in Valdosta in February. Orlando Sentinel recruiting analyst Chris Hays says "he's like a defensive end playing offensive guard."
"He's very aggressive," Hays said. "He's a good athlete, too. He can move."
King, a key cog in coach Wayne Ward's 4-2-5 base defense, has watched his stock ascend via his versatility. Raiders assistant Greg Meyer said King could fluctuate from end to outside 'backer to strong safety, depending on the situation.
"His athleticism kind of allows us to line him up at a variety of spots," Meyer said. "His snap count will be higher at defensive end as opposed to those other positions, but we'll move him around."
