Ried's redemption leads Sharks at districts

TAMPA -- With grayness overhead and gusts at his back Friday, Anclote junior Jamaree Ried stared down the same straightaway in the same stadium at which he had struggled miserably only seven days before.

In that meet, the Berkeley Tailgate, Ried hit the first hurdle and stepped on the second en route to a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter version of the event. One Friday later, at the Class 2A, District 9 meet, he found himself flanked by several of the same foes.

Redemption came with a ribbon.

Ried prevailed in 15.39 seconds -- nearly two full seconds faster than the prior week's effort -- to provide one of the handful of Pasco County highlights in the nine-team event. If the week before wasn't an inspiration to Ried, the wind was.

"I felt like I came back and did what I had to do," said Ried, who also finished second in the 300 hurdles. "I was like, 'I've got to run fast, and if I don't, the wind will carry me.'"

The top four finishers in each event qualified for Thursday's Region 3 meet in Titusville. Joining Ried on the trip east will be 6-foot-6 teammate Spencer Guerette, who won the 1,600 for his second career district title; and Sharks high jump champ Andrew Janus (6 feet).

Wearing Blues Brothers-style shades, Guerette (pictured) ripped off the eyewear and flung it at the end of Lap Three, shortly after being overtaken by Berkeley Prep sophomore Max Borland. With 250 meters remaining, he found another gear and pulled away.

"Around 300 (meters to go), that's when you put in that little turbo gear you have," said Guerette, who placed second in the 800. "When I had to do that I knew it was time to go, and I knew if I didn't, I'd lose my district championship and I wasn't going to lose it."

On the girls side, Sharks freshman Emily Gauvey pulled off one of the meet's major upsets, winning the high jump with a personal-best-tying 5-6 effort. Reigning district champ Courtney Prengaman of Wesley Chapel was second (5-2).

By also placing second in both the 100-meter dash (12.53) and 300 hurdles (48.35), Gauvey individually accounted for 26 of Anclote's 50 team points, good enough for a fifth-place finish. Anclote's boys also were fifth (73).
