District track: Again, pain accompanies gain for AHN's McEnany

TAMPA -- For the second district meet in a row, Ryann McEnany winced her way up the medal stand, basking in the agony of victory.

One year after winning a pair of district hurdles titles with ankle tendinitis, the Academy of the Holy Names senior defended them at Friday's 2A-9 meet at Berkeley Prep despite a partial tear in a right quadriceps muscle.

For good measure, she also ran anchor on the Jaguars' winning 4x400-meter relay team.

"We found out two weeks ago (via an MRI)," said McEnany (pictured), who helped lead the Jags to their second consecutive team title (217.5 points). "I thought I was done. The doctor said, 'You don't need to run anymore.'"

Credit resilience, a radical blood treatment (where blood platelets from her arm were injected into the quad) and a sturdy tailwind with helping McEnany pull off a district sequel on an overcast day in west Tampa.

By contrast, junior teammate Claire Snyder flourished despite navigating the wind in both directions.

Snyder won the girls 1,600 and 3,200, and ran a leg on the triumphant 4x800 relay team. In each race, a northward tailwind was followed by a brutal headwind on the backstretch.

"I never wear a watch and I wore one 'cause I wanted to get under 5:11 (in the 1,600)," said Snyder, who finished in 5:25.21. "I gave up looking at my watch after a lap and a half."

Other multiple girls champions were Berkeley Prep's Addi Harden, who captured the discus and shot put; and Middleton junior Deja Rodgers. The cousin of Denver Broncos cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Rodgers won the 100 and 200 and ran anchor on the Tigers' winning 4x100 relay team.

On the boys side, Jesuit scored points in all 17 events, and absolutely owned some field events, to capture its fifth consecutive district title (163 points).

Junior Jack Taylor was the Tigers' lone multiple champ, winning the shot put (personal-best 50 feet, 11 inches) and discus. Jesuit totaled 49 points in those two events alone and 18 more in the pole vault, where junior Nick Catchur repeated as district champ.

"I talked to them all week about just competing," Tigers coach Andy Wood said. "And they did -- in all 17 events."

Runner-up Robinson captured all three relays en route to 127 points, getting individual wins from triple jumper Damon Willis and sophomore Jack Rogers, who upset defending district champ Spencer Guerette of Anclote in the 800.
