Clearwater Central Catholic had nine athletes who made their college commitments official during a ceremony Tuesday in the school’s auditorium.
The biggest contingent came from football with five players who helped the Marauders advance to the Class 3A state semifinals announcing their commitments: David Ferry (Baldwin-Wallace), JJ Fitzpatrick (Methodist), Brett Rein (Catholic University of America), Domenic James (Fairmont State) and Troy Olmo (Greensboro).
That brings the total to nine for CCC’s 2013 class who will play football in college.
Two basketball players, Gary Wintermeier (Clearwater Christian College) and Ben Kieler (Loras College), signed. Wintermeier averaged 15.4 points and 11.3 rebounds. Kieler, a two-sport athlete, will also run track in college. He finished fourth in the high jump at the Class A state meet.
The other signees were cross country standout Saphara Harrell (North Florida) and volleyball star Rachel Miller (Jacksonville).
Harrell was a state qualifier in cross country and track. Miller led the state in digs (694) and helped the Marauders advance to the state semifinals in volleyball for the first time since 1989.
