Miami Booker 62, Lakewood 14: Lakewood coach Cory Moore said he wasn’t concerned about the score Friday night. He just wanted his players to experience a big-time football atmosphere in Miami.
“This allowed our guys to see what a good team looks like and what we need to work on in the offseason,” Moore said. “We think we’re good when we beat the teams down the street, but get out of the area and you see what you really need to do.”
The Spartans played without athlete Jocqui Ellison, who sat out because of academics. Also, Moore said lineman Isaiah Wynn played only one series.
“Once we saw what kind of game it was, we got him out of there,” Moore said. “What we really wanted to do was give some of our second-line guys playing time.”
Booker scored 54 points in the first half before playing its reserves in the second. The game was played with no special teams. The teams started each drive on the 35-yard line.
Boca Ciega 14, Arcadia 14: The Pirates unveiled a passing game utilizing the athleticism of Jaylaan Wimbush at quarterback. He used his legs to buy time to throw for more than 150 yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yarder to Jarquez Johnson.
Boca Ciega also was aggressive on defense, forcing six turnovers. The Pirates led 14-7 through the first three quarters when the varsity played. Arcadia’s junior varsity squad tied the game in the fourth quarter.
