Day 3 of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft included rounds 11-40. Here's a look at some locals who were selected on the final day:
RHP Kyle Westwood, University of North Florida, Astros (13th round, No. 377 overall): The former Palm Harbor University pitcher has the distinction of being the first Pinellas player taken in the 2013 MLB draft. Westwood, a 6-foot-3, 190 pound righthander, made 15 appearances and nine starts for the Owls this season and was 4-1 with a 3.75 ERA. In 62.1 innings he had 71 strikeouts and 12 walks. If he signs, Westwood would join area players Lance McCullers (Jesuit) and Brett Phillips (Seminole) in the minor leagues. Both were part of the 2012 draft.
RHP Ryan Etsell, Hillsborough CC, Angels (16th round, No. 487 overall): MLB.com says this about the USF commit: "Etsell has excellent control and walked only nine batters in 101 innings this season
RHP Caleb Kellogg, University of Tampa, Orioles (17th round, No. 519 overall): Louisiana native went 4-1 for the national champs with a team-high 53 strikeouts.
RHP Cody Crouse, Bloomindale, Mets (19th round, No. 566 overall): Pitched 15 inning for the Bulls this season with a 2.80 ERA and team-best 57 strikeouts.
C Shane Rowland, University of Tampa, Cubs (20th round, No. 591 overall): Tampa Catholic alum started 26 games as a sophomore last season behind the plate.
C Daniel Torres, Saint Leo, Mariners (20th round, No. 597 overall): The former Countryside catcher is a 6-foot, 170-pound junior. He starred behind the plate with a .989 fielding percentage and batted .280 this spring. He also batted in 35 runs in 49 games for the Lions. The former all-Pinallas County talent threw out 16 runners as a sophomore and 13 more as a junior.
RHP Jon Keller, University of Tampa, Orioles (22nd round, No. 669 overall): MLB.com says: "Keller has clean arm action and he uses his 6-foot-5, 215-pound frame to throw with a good downhill angle. ...Keller's fastball sits in the low-90s and his changeup and slider are both below-average offerings. Without improved secondary stuff, Keller profiles as a reliever."
LHP Rick Teasley, Saint Leo, Rays (23rd round, No. 698 overall): The Port Saint Lucie native led the Lions with 73 strikeouts in 86.2 innings. He posted a 3.63 ERA and a 5-4 record in 14 starts.
LHP Nick Gonzalez, USF, Giants (24th round, No. 732 overall): The Leto alum led the Bulls with 77 strikeouts this season, including a career-high 10 in games.
RHP Brett Morales, King, Reds (24th round, No. 735 overall): Ace confirmed his commitment to the University of Florida on Friday. MLB.com says: "He's a little more raw than some prep pitchers from Florida, but he has a very quick arm, one that throws a fastball in the 92-94 mph range. He's not the biggest guy in the world, but the arm strength and clean delivery might allow some to look past that."
1B Jake Schrader, University of Tampa, Braves (27th round, No. 823 overall): Pasco alum had 51 RBIs and a team-best 10 home runs this season for the Spartans.
RHP Nick Eicholtz, Cambridge Christian, Brewers (29th round, No. 872 overall): This firm Bama commit had a 0.73 ERA and 82 strikeouts in leading his team to state. Also hit .327 with 17 RBIs.
RHP Matt Abramson, University of Tampa, White Sox (29th round, No. 873 overall): 7-1 with a 1.38 ERA and 27 Ks for the Spartans.
CF Dalton Martinez, Dunedin, Rays (31st round, No. 938 overall): Dad, Dave, is the Rays’ bench coach. Dalton played at Countryside as a junior, but with no area high school this season.
