We're featuring some of our HomeTeam 100 players, including our No. 61 player, Freedom DE Scott Patchan:
He looks more like a basketball player than a kid who plays football.
“Blame my metabolism,” the 6-foot-6, 230-pounder Scott Patchan quips.
In a family that has produced two football behemoths — dad was a huge tackle who won two national titles at Miami and was a third-round NFL draft pick, and brother Matt is a 6-6, 300-pounder at Boston College — Scott remains the slightest of the group.
But if he isn’t following his dad and brother in the same size jersey, he is following in the same footsteps. Heading into the fall, Patchan is primed to burst onto the local football scene.
“I think I’m quicker off the line, I’m more explosive, and I’ve been putting on more weight and adding size and strength to take on the running game,’’ he said.
He also ran a 4.53 at practice last week and has picked up offers from USF, FIU and Miami this offseason.
Last year, Patchan was on the verge of a big season when he injured his back in the fourth game, which was also his best one — six tackles, three for a loss, and 2.5 sacks against Steinbrenner.
“I’m just looking to come back and play to the best of my ability,’’ the junior said. “You can’t really control how many sacks you get, but I’m going to do my best and play ball. The rest will come.”
As for adding a few more pounds, Patchan says he hopes to be around 250 by the time he graduates.
For now, he’s content being lean.
“Solid muscle,” he says. “And bones.”
