We're featuring some of our HomeTeam 100 players, including our No. 65 player, Anclote RB/LB Willie Barrett:
Willie Barrett was at the center of one of Tampa Bay’s best stories last fall.
He starred on offense as Pasco County’s leading rusher (1,400 yards, 14 touchdowns) and on defense (56 tackles) to lead the Sharks to the playoffs for the first time. He battered through holes that didn’t exist and pounded his way to an all-North Suncoast season.
For an encore, his inexperienced offensive line wants him to get 2,000 yards. Barrett (6-0, 210) said he’ll settle for 1,500.
“I’m not putting that much pressure on me,” Barrett said. “I know it’ll come when it comes.”
Barrett spent the offseason adding new wrinkles to his game.
His 40-yard time dropped from 4.75 seconds to 4.6. He went to college camps across the Southeast to improve his techniques. And he worked with the Sharks’ quarterbacks after 7-on-7 sessions to improve his pass catching.
The goal: To add more versatility and receiving yards to one of the North Suncoast’s top offensive threats on a team with realistic hopes of its first district championship.
