TAMPA — In a downpour Thursday night, Plant held true to form with a commanding 41-8 win at Gaither (1-2).
The Panthers’ special teams started strong, recovering the opening kickoff at the Gaither 10-yard line. Plant (2-0-1) continued to get prime field position with its special teams play.
“We pride ourselves on being mentally tough,” said Plant coach Robert Weiner. “We like to think that when it gets this way that it’s an advantage for us.”
Panthers quarterback Colby Brown was 8-of-13 with 100 yards in the first half; he accounted for two second-quarter touchdowns when the rain was at its peak.
“Colby is really, really good at getting everybody involved and understanding what we’re trying to accomplish with our offense,” said Weiner.
Gaither’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter, engineered by backup quarterback David Mazur and capped by Jalen Cochran’s 24-yard run.
