RIVERVIEW — After a 30-minute weather delay, Steinbrenner posted a 33-24 victory over Spoto on Thursday night.
Shyheem Barthel was the workhorse for the Warriors, carrying the ball 21 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
Spoto (0-3) opened with a double pass as wide receiver Todd Sims caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage then threw an 83-yard pass to another wideout, Marc McCoy, for a touchdown to put the Spartans in front 8-0 following a two-point conversion.
That lead didn’t last. The Warriors (1-2) scored the next 34 points, with quarterback Curtis Fitch and wide receiver Kezio Snelling hooking up twice for touchdowns of 25 and 12 yards, and went into halftime with a 20-8 lead.
Barthel opened the second-half scoring with his second touchdown run, and Josh Edwards turned a blocked punt into a touchdown to account for the Warriors’ final points.
The Spartans got a couple of last-quarter scores as quarterback Kevin Hibley threw for a touchdown and ran for another.
