Times’ super 7
1. Plant (2-0-1): If the Gaither game (41-8 Panthers win) was any indication, this offense is waterproof.
2. Armwood (2-0): On the bright side, Hawks get two more full days to prepare for Hillsborough.
3. Jefferson (3-0): Dragons, after beating Robinson 39-22, get a bye week before Armwood.
4. Sickles (3-0): Best team in school history.
5. Tampa Catholic (2-1). Crusaders need to bottle up that performance (27-3 win) at Tarpon Springs.
6. Newsome (2-1): Rain, rain went away Thursday vs. Sickles. Ray Ray would not.
7. Plant City (2-0). Raiders, idle this week, bracing for a desperate Durant team.
In the conversation: Berkeley Prep (2-0), Bloomingdale (2-0), East Bay (2-0), Hillsborough (0-1), King (2-0), Tampa Bay Tech (1-1)
Audibles
“We have a great defense. We have a lot of great players, a lot of guys that are selfless and hard working. They play as a unit, they play together well, and our defensive coaches did a great job.” Sickles coach Brian Turner about his defense’s performance in the Gryphons’ 27-7 win over Newsome on Thursday.
“He’s a heck of a player. Anybody that’s going to Alabama is pretty dang good. They’re very good defensively.” CCC coach John Davis on Jesuit linebacker Vincent Jackson, who led the Tigers defensively, despite their 21-3 loss to the Marauders. (Jackson has a Bama offer)
A weekend spoiled
When asked to name the worst part about having Thursday’s game at Hillsborough postponed to Monday (due to inclement weather), Armwood coach Sean Callahan cited a laundry list:
1. Paying for another pregame meal
2. Washing clothes your team didn’t play in
3. Knowing your next two opponents (Robinson, Jefferson) will be in the stands watching Monday
4. Being forced to cancel JV practice Monday and Tuesday (the varsity staff coaches the JV)
5. Hearing your cell phone ring throughout the night (from people wanting to know the status of the game)
Blindside
Some things we didn’t see coming
1. Newsome being held to only seven points. The Wolves, who had their way with Gaither offensively only a week ago, haven’t been held to that few points at home since Sept. 4, 2009.
2. Garrett Young. The Cambridge Christian quarterback scored six touchdowns — three through the air, three on the ground — and completed 11 of 17 passes in the Lancers’ home-opening 48-21 win against Bishop McLaughlin.
3. Three days of football games in Week 3. Will we ever get a dry game night?
By the numbers
10 TDs totaled by Seffner Christian’s Robbie Shell, who had four more in Friday’s 63-6 win at Merritt Island Christian
29 Years since King began a season 3-0. The Lions can equal that mark Monday at home against Middleton.
58 Points averaged by Seffner Christian in its first three games (all victories)
57.3 Points averaged by Seffner Christian’s basketball team all of last season
197 Receiving yards for Carrollwood Day receiver Mike Smith in the Patriots’ 49-22 romp of Shorecrest
Final five words
Rain chance Monday: 50 percent
