Super seven
1. East Lake (3-0): The Eagles are the most impressive team in the county, outscoring their opponents a combined 119-0 through the first three weeks.
2. Largo (2-1): The return of Jarvis Stewart paid off in a big way as the Packers bounced back from last week’s loss with a 32-13 win over Gibbs.
3. Clearwater Central Catholic (2-1): In their first meeting with Jesuit since 2005, the Marauders get back on track by surviving a defensive struggle to win 21-3.
4. Lakewood (2-1): Some pregame shenanigans fired up the Spartans, who beat St. Petersburg 28-3 for their second straight win in this city rivalry.
5. Pinellas Park (3-0): The Patriots joined East Lake as the only public schools in the county still undefeated after a hard-fought 10-8 victory over Osceola.
6. Countryside (2-1): After starting 2-0, the Cougars took some lumps in a 27-0 loss to Palmetto, the first time Countryside has been shut out in more than a decade.
7. Calvary Christian (3-0): Thanks to stellar performance from Danny Giordano in a 34-6 win over Northside, the Warriors are off to their best start in school history.
Knocking on the door: Tarpon Springs (2-1), St. Petersburg (2-1), St. Petersburg Catholic (2-1).
Five top performances
1. Tyler Kaminski, QB, Palm Harbor University: The senior had a season-best 270 yards passing and accounted for every score, throwing for three touchdowns, running for two more, converting all five extra points and kicking a 36-yard field goal in a 38-7 win over Clearwater.
2. Danny Giordano, RB, Calvary Christian: In less than three quarters of work, Giordano rushed for 177 yards on 13 carries and scored every touchdown for the Warriors (four rushing, one fumble return) in a 34-6 victory over Northside Christian.
3. Jacquez Hill, WR, Dixie Hollins: Hill caught three touchdown passes in the Rebels’ 28-17 win over Seminole. The catches were for 34, 30 and 6 yards.
4. Jarvis Stewart, RB, Largo: The USF recruit had the third 200-yard game of his career, finishing with 213 yards and scoring twice vs. Gibbs.
5. Donterio Fowler, WR, Lakewood: Fowler set the tone right away with an 87-yard kickoff return to start the game against St. Petersburg. Later in the first quarter, Fowler scored on a 39-yard touchdown catch.
What’s trending
Zero tolerance for foes: Another game, another shutout for East Lake’s defense. That’s three straight games in which the Eagles have blanked their opponent, already matching the number of shutouts the program had in the previous four seasons combined. The streak could continue this week considering East Lake is playing Clearwater, which has scored 14 points in three games.
Rebels on the rise: The last time Dixie Hollins started a season 2-1 was in 2008. After wins over Osceola and Northeast, the Rebels lost six of their last eight games that season. With a tough schedule that includes games against Pinellas Park and Venice in the next two weeks, the Rebels are hoping there isn’t a repeat to 2008.
Wynn injured: Lakewood offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn sprained hia left ankle in the third quarter of Thursday’s win against St. Petersburg. He will be day-to-day throughout the week and questionable for Friday’s game against Gibbs.
Vikings vexed: It was bad enough Northeast had most of its offensive stars transfer to Lakewood before the start of fall practice. Now the remaining skill players are dealing with injuries. Starting quarterback Charlie Krasuski is out with a hamstring injury. Running back Devin Bowers may be out for the season with a ruptured kidney. And running back Ricky Gamble and receiver Devon Neath suffered season-ending knee injuries against Boca Ciega. In the absence of so many playmakers, the Vikings are the only team in the county that has yet to score this season.
Five final words
Time for some district games.
