A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.
Female Hot Shot: Leah Neck, Fivay
Sport: Soccer
Skinny: Though relatively new to soccer, Neck is a versatile athlete. A forward as well as a cross country runner, much of her success comes from her speed. This is her third year in the sport, and she and her coach said she’s learning quickly. Neck scored twice against Nature Coast and once against Springstead, bringing her season total to 10.
Male Hot Shot: Damian King, Indian Rocks Christian
Sport: Football
Skinny: King picked the right time to have his best game of the season. He was all over the field in a 28-14 win over Naples First Baptist on Friday, helping the Golden Eagles reach the state semifinals for the first time. King scored three touchdowns on runs of 12 and 14 yards and also caught a 30-yard touchdown pass. On defense, he had two interceptions (two others were called back on penalties) and recovered a fumble. “That’s what he does, Damian makes plays,” coach Mark Buchanan said. “He’s been doing it all season.” King has 21 touchdowns this season, 11 rushing and 10 receiving to go along with 823 yards rushing and 588 receiving. On Friday the Golden Eagles host Hialeah Champagnat Catholic in the Class 2A semifinals.
