Three Pasco football players make things official

DADE CITY – Family members and fellow students teased Pasco’s three football commits, asking if they remembered how to spell their names or if they needed a crayon.

They all managed just fine on their own, and RJ Scaife, Malik Johns and Ajee Carr signed their letters of intent.

Scaife will attend Western Kentucky, Johns is headed to Samford and Carr will play at Huntingdon.

Samford’s mascot is the Bulldog, a detail that didn’t go unnoticed by the crowd. “I can’t believe you’ll be a Bulldog,” someone called out, and the players laughed. Also Bulldogs? Oh, just rival Zephyrhills.

Johns, a flexible athlete who has racked up 740 receiving yards in three varsity seasons at Pasco, had several offers but chose Samford on the promise of early playing time and a strong academic program.

“I know when I graduate, I’ll get a good job,” he said.

Football coach and athletic director Tom McHugh took the stack of letters and dismissed the students in the room to class, marking the end of his players' high school careers.
