With a 3-pointer at the buzzer of its region quarterfinal game against Academy of the Holy Names, Lakeland McKeel forced overtime.
The Jaguars, though, played their best basketball of the night in the extra minutes, coach Chris Severini said, and Holy Names beat the Wildcats 59-51.
Ashley McWilliams had a triple double for the (18 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists) for the Jaguars, and Domenica Howard added 17 from the bench to help the Jaguars advance.
"When a shot like that goes in and your on the road, that's a lot of adversity in one moment," Severini said. "We were able to gather ourselves and we played a really good four minutes of overtime."
In the next round, the Jaguars will meet Tampa Catholic, which beat Lake Placid 50-34.
Though he's proud of his girls for advancing, Tampa Catholic coach Matthew Rocha admits his girls didn't play their best basketball. Still, the Crusaders — who were led by freshman point guard Mia Blocker's 17 points — live to see another day.
"It's always better to win ugly than to lose pretty," he said.
