Former Wharton quarterback Chase Litton has orally committed to play football at Marshall, Litton announced Wednesday morning.

The commitment is the latest step in an up-and-down recruiting cycle for one of Tampa Bay’s top passers.

The 6-foot-6, three-star prospect threw for almost 8,000 yards in his four-year career with the Wildcats. He passed for 54 touchdowns, rushed for 10 more and accounted for more than 2,500 yards of offense as a senior last fall. Litton is also a standout basketball player and was a second-team all-county selection this winter.

He initially committed to USF but decommitted over the summer. He did not sign with a program on national signing day and told the Tampa Bay Times last month that he would attend the Atlanta Sports Academy, a prep school that would help him improve his academics and athletics and reclassify him as a recruit for the class of 2015. Wednesday, he said via Twitter that he planned to return to Tampa and start at Marshall in January 2015.

Oral commitments are non-binding until recruits sign letters of intent.
