Super 7
Records through Tuesday.
1. Mitchell (20-1, 8-0): Leading hitter Kassidy Neptune has at least one hit and one RBI in every game since the Mustangs’ only loss, and the team has outscored opponents 69-9 during its eight-game win streak.
2. Hernando (18-1, 10-1): The surprising Leopards have won 11 straight, including a win over Citrus, which has beaten No. 5 Nature Coast and is the only team to beat No. 1 Mitchell. Hernando gets a chance to avenge its only loss Friday against Nature Coast.
3. Gulf (13-2, 6-1): Boasting four batters hitting over .430 and coming off a Tuesday win over River Ridge, the Bucs have proven they will be a dangerous team in the playoffs.
4. River Ridge (19-3, 5-2): Royal Knights dropped to third in the district with the loss to Gulf and have now lost one more game than they did all of last year (though all have been by a single run).
5. Nature Coast (17-2, 10-0): The young Sharks lead Class 5A-7 by virtue of being the only team to beat Hernando this season, and if they can do it again Friday, they’ll be seeded No. 1 in the district tournament.
6. Academy at the Lakes (11-2, 0-0): The Wildcats play in a two-team district with Cambridge Christian, who they play Thursday, but are probably already trying to tune up for a likely second-round region meeting with defending state champ Canterbury.
7. Springstead (8-8, 5-2): Seven of the Eagles’ eight losses are to teams in the top five, but they knocked Fivay out of the super 7 with a 15-0 win over the Falcons last week and have won three straight by a 34-1 margin.
