Baseball super 7
Records through Wednesday.
1. King (16-3, 12-1): The Lions continue to be hard to stop. Four starters have batting averages greater than .300, with Michael Taylor and Bubby Terp leading the way with .404 and .429 averages, respectively.
2. Plant (15-5, 9-0): The Panthers, who haven’t given up a run in almost two weeks, are the only team to beat Alonso this season, outscoring the Ravens 32-3 in three games.
3. Jesuit (15-2, 6-0): Despite recent roster changes, the Tigers haven’t skipped a beat since, outscoring opponents 32-5. The big test will be tonight’s rivalry game against Tampa Catholic, against which Jesuit lost in a walk-off the first time around.
4. Alonso (16-3, 7-2): Alonso has faltered against Plant all season, but it’s the only team to have given the Ravens, who own one of the best records in Hillsborough County, any trouble.
5. Steinbrenner (12-4, 5-3): Since starting the season 8-1, the Warriors have had some big triumphs but also come great falls. Still, the Warriors have the talent to make it far.
6. Durant (12-4, 6-2): The Cougars have had to rebuild a bit, but it’s been so far, so good for the 2013 state runners-up. They’ve won six of their past seven games and are battling for the top spot in a tough district.
7. Hillsborough (13-4, 11-2): The Terriers have won seven of their past eight, including two shutouts, and continue to give King a run for its money in Class 6A, District 9.
In the conversation: Jefferson (15-6, 10-3), Brandon (12-8, 6-3), Strawberry Crest (14-7, 6-3), Sickles (11-6, 4-3), Tampa Catholic (9-4, 1-1), Tampa Prep (13-6, 6-0)
