Plant City senior Kristen Wyckoff signed her letter of intent Friday to  play softball at USF.

Wyckoff said the only other school she was seriously considering was Florida. USF was enarmored of her blazing speed, which made the leadoff hitter the fourth best in the state with 42 steals last season.

"I definitely wanted to stay close to home. I hate the cold. I've been committed to USF really for two years," she said Friday.

The lefty slap hitter batted .592 as a junior as the Raiders went 17-6, including a 10-0 regular-season mark in District 7A-8. Plant City got upset by Riverview in the district tournament finals, then ran into eventual state runnerup Bartow in the first round, losing 4-0.

After playing four sports as a freshman, Wyckoff scaled back to volleyball, flag football and softball the last two years. She'll only play the latter two, whose seasons overlap this spring, as a senior.

A ceremony attended by friends and family was held at the PCHS Media Center Friday morning. It was held later than most signings this week because it was the only way Makensie McAavoy, one of Wyckoff's best friends, could attend. McAvoy is a freshman playing at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.
