Girls
1. Seffner Christian (7-0): The Crusaders have had few — if any — challenges en route to an undefeated start, winning their first seven games by an average of 46 points. They won their last game 74-5, shutting out Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate in three of four quarters.
2. Freedom (6-0): Riverview transfer Faith Woodard (25 points per game) and sophomore Taylor Emery (21 points) give the Patriots possibly the county’s most dangerous inside-outside combo. And they’re only going to get better.
3. Steinbrenner (8-0): Few teams have a more impressive resume than the Warriors, who knocked off Wiregrass Ranch and Tampa Bay Tech earlier this week. Things don’t ease up either: they’re at Freedom next week.
4. Tampa Bay Tech (6-3): The Titans have stumbled a bit, dropping two straight at the Florida Prospects Thanksgiving Invitational in Orlando, then losing at home Monday to Steinbrenner. Their offense still needs some work.
5. Plant (5-1): After a season-opening loss to Tampa Bay Tech, the Panthers have run off five straight wins. Plant is getting contributions from all over its roster, with only one player averaging double figures in points (senior Reggine Brown) and five averaging between 6.0 and 9.0 points.
6. Sickles (6-0): Despite the graduation of Times’ Player of the Year Bre Crum, the Gryphons have gotten off to an unbeaten start. Sickles has a small but deep and athletic roster that hasn’t won a game by fewer than 13 points so far.
7. Holy Names (5-3): The Jaguars played No. 1 Seffner Christian closer than anyone this season, losing by 16 on Nov. 29. As expected, senior Ashley McWilliams has seamlessly transitioned into the role as team leader and is averaging 20.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.3 steals.
