Newsome running back Clint Carnell, one of the catalysts to the Wolves’ best season in school history, has picked up his first college offer, from Georgetown.
Coach Kenneth Hiscock confirmed the offer Thursday evening in a text message.
As a senior, Carnell rushed for 871 yards and 12 touchdowns and tied for the team lead with 17 receptions for 203 yards and another score.
The 5-foot-9, 200-pound Carnell was a versatile and sturdy complement to do-everything star Will Worth, who led the team in rushing, passing and tackles, and together they led the Wolves to the Class 8A region final.
Carnell rushed for more than 100 yards in three games, including Newsome’s 21-14 upset win over then-unbeaten Durant in a region semifinal.
He finished his three-year varsity career with more than 2,000 yards of total offense, including 1,802 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns.
Georgetown plays in Patriot League of the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-AA. The Hoyas, who finished 5-6 this season, have eight players from Florida on their roster but none from the Tampa Bay area.
