A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week
Female Hot Shot: Savannah Plentovich, Calvary Christian
Sport: Basketball
Skinny: Plentovich had a big week against two good teams. Against Class 8A East Lake, she scored a team-high 20 in a 54-35 win. And against Seffner Christian Plentovich had 21 points, including four 3-pointers. She leads the Warriors with 14.8 points per game.
Male Hot Shot: Erik Thomas, Wesley Chapel
Sport: Basketball
Skinny: Thomas set a career high with 45 points while adding a school-record 26 rebounds in a 74-59 victory over Gulf. Later in the week in the Wildcats’ convincing 66-35 win over a strong Anclote team, he added 21 rebounds and nearly outscored the Sharks by himself (34 points). “He’s not strictly an inside player,” Wesley Chapel coach Doug Greseth said. “He’s not strictly an outside player. He really does a lot of both.” Thomas, who is averaging 32 points and 18 rebounds, said his success comes from attacking inside. “I just have the mentality of taking them down low,” said the 6-foot-5 senior. “That gets me to where I need to get."
