Jesuit catcher Ryan McCullers has orally committed to Middle Tennessee State, according to Tigers coach Richie Warren.
McCullers, a Tampa Bay Times’ second-team all-Hillsborough selection, hit .424 with 26 RBI and 28 runs scored as a junior. He also earned recognition for his defense at the Perfect Game USA 2013 National Showcase in Minneapolis, Minn., last month.
The younger brother of former Jesuit star and 2012 MLB first-round draft pick Lance McCullers Jr., Ryan McCullers was an important contributor to a Tigers team that was ranked No. 1 nationally for much of the spring. Jesuit went on to lose in the Class 5A semifinals.
Middle Tennessee State will compete in Conference USA next year after being a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Blue Raiders, who went 28-28 last year, don’t have a player from Florida on their roster.
